Justice and Health

Justice
Strengthening Tasmania's justice response to problematic drug use. The ATDC calls for increased investment to strengthen Tasmania’s Court Mandated Diversion Program and expand the Program to include problematic alcohol use. The ATDC calls for increased investment into alcohol and other drug treatment services within Tasmania’s correctional facilities. The ATDC supports the introduction of a Therapeutic Division of the Tasmanian Magistrates Court.

Stigma and Discrimination

Stigma and Discrimination
The vision of the ATDC is a Tasmania without alcohol, tobacco and other drug related harm or discrimination. To achieve this, it is a priority of the ATDC to tackle the stigma and discrimination associated with alcohol and other drug use across the broader community and within the health and human services sector. The ATDC believes that stigma and discrimination directed towards people who use alcohol and other drugs, including significant others and those who work in the alcohol and other drugs sector, should not be tolerated.

Tobacco 21

Tobacco
Tasmania has the most concerning statistics for tobacco usage in the country and the ATDC supports any initiatives that seek to reduce these statistics. The ATDC supports the introduction of the Public Health Amendment (Prevention of sale of smoking products to underage persons) Bill 2018. In providing this support, the ATDC acknowledges that this change will not be the sole remedy for Tasmania’s above-average smoking rates and any initiative must be implemented alongside a suite of evidence-based measures and initiatives, particularly targeting Tasmanians most at risk.
