At the start of the year the ATDC lodged an objection to an off licence liquor application for a Caltex service station in the suburb of Moonah in southern Tasmania. The applicant was seeking to sell Tasmanian beer, wine and spirits 24/7.
With assistance of The Salvation Army Bridge Program, Holyoake and Anglicare Tasmania – the ATDC’s objection was based on a range of concerns including the high number of existing alcohol outlets in close vicinity to the service station, the availability of alcohol in a location frequented by minors, and the availability of alcohol 24/7.
The ATDC’s submission was one of three received from the Tasmanian community, based on these objections the Licensing Commissioner has refused the application.
As many are aware, successful objections to liquor licence applications can be difficult, so this is an excellent outcome.
The Commissioner’s report on this decision is available on the Treasury website.
